It has been extremely hard to post my savings as frequently as I'd like lately. I've been on the grind for the past month or so (making dresses), trying to work my way out of debt! I think it's paying off - our last student loan is now down to $12,510.39! (Yes, I know how much I owe to the penny! I'm watching this loan like a hawk!!!) By August, I'm hoping to be screaming that I'm Debt Free! Couponing is still playing a major role in getting me to Debt Freedom. I've been keeping a running tab of my grocery/toiletry/household spendings & savings (I know, I'm a nerd!), and here are my year to date totals: Amount Spent - $562.50 Amount Saved - $863.56 Total Value - $1,426.06 % Saved - 60.56%!!! Avg. $$ Spent/Month - $40.18 When I 1st started couponing, I chased after just about every deal. I was more wrapped up in the game of the hunt then I was providing for my family at the lowest cost possible. This year, I've become what you'd call a Coupon Minimalist. Lol!! I only use coupons to get items that my household will actually use. So, needless to say, I've been passing up alot of "free" items and sometimes I go several weeks without stepping into a drug store!! lol

Digiorno Deal!

Have you heard of Digiorno's new Pizza & Wyngs or Pizza & Cookies combos? Well, here's a way to try them out for the low-skie!!

Head over to their facebook page and "like" them. You will then be able to print a $4/2 coupon. Kroger is running a sale on all Digiorno Pizzas for $5.48!!!!

That means, you can get 2 pizza packs for $3.48 each! That's Crazy!!!

What's even crazier is that another catalina coupon will spit out when you buy this pizza! (For me, it spit out another $4/2, then a $2/1 coupon). I'm not sure when the catalina pool runs dry...I stopped at 7 boxes and am no longer curious to see when it'll cut me off! That's more than enough boxes of pizza for me to fall back on when I'm too tired to cook!

We are on the home stretch! Last year, we were able to whittle our last debt down from $36k to $24k! We’re hoping to knock the rest of this bad boy out by the end of this year. There is a curve ball – this battle wouldn’t be suspenseful without one, right?? My husband quit his job! Yes, he quit…in the middle of a horrible economy, without having a back-up in his pocket, he just threw in the towel.

Why, you ask? Well, this decision was by no means an overnight one. It took us a year to come to this conclusion. His work was unbearably stressful – to the point of stressing me out. We decided that he’s too young to be stuck in a job just to get the bills paid! This is very much in line with our reasoning for getting out of debt – we don’t want our financial situation to keep us from fulfilling our dreams. And because we’ve been so faithful with keeping our monthly budgets, we’re able to live on one income now and still pay off debt!

Don’t get me wrong, hard work and discipline aren’t the only tools working for us. We have a powerful God on our side, and He is seeing to it that our expectations are exceeded (Malachi 3:10). So far, my husband has been unemployed for ~1 month, and it’s like we haven’t missed a bit. All of our expenses have been covered, including a transmission fluid change for his car!

I know the rest of this journey is not going to be a walk in the park, but I am so thrilled to be so close to the finish line!

Throwing a Party on a Budget!

My husband is turning 30 in a couple of months! In order to create a “sophisticated” atmosphere without breaking the bank, we are buying supplies, decorations, etc… now. You do not need to compromise your special event just because you’re on a budget. Creating a budget-friendly party, however, takes a lot of planning. Over the next couple of months, I will walk you through all of the steps my husband and I are taking to make this event a success! Feel free to use these ideas for planning any of your upcoming events.

Location – my husband wants his party to be held at our house, and I can’t lie…I’m really pleased with this decision. This will give us so much creative freedom! And not having to pay to rent out a facility will allow us to put more money into decorations and food. For your gig, if you decide to hold it at a facility make sure to shop around (mainly for places with limited catering restrictions) and negotiate your final price – it never hurts to ask!

Food – I will be taking on this huge task by my lonesome; I consider it my gift to my husband! Cooking for your own event not only keeps your costs down, it also makes for a more healthy meal (at least it will in my case; I’m a stickler for using all natural products). It also allows you to create a unique menu…for example, we’re serving all of my husband’s favorite dishes (which crosses a spectrum of nationalities)! We’re not forced to stick to 1 meat and 2 side options like most caterers would like you to.

Taste Tests – to make sure that every menu item tastes phenomenal, I have been incorporating taste tests into our weekly meals. For example, my husband loves Asian Zing wings from Buffalo Wild Wings, so I made some for him (using a recipe) a few weeks ago. They turned out okay but were not worth the amount of time we invested into them (we had to marinate them for one day and then cook them on the grill). Tonight, I will be making a simpler version using a deep fryer and a sauce that I can mix together in 5 minutes. I’ll let you know how these turn out!

Preparation – timing is crucial when you are the caterer for an event! You should develop a written time schedule for prepping and cooking your food. Certain items can be prepped one day or two ahead of your event: i.e., preparing cold items like salad, sushi, etc…; chopping veggies; preparing marinades; baking desserts; making icings, or leaving out eggs & butter to reach room temperature. For my husband’s party, I plan on making the cupcakes one day prior to the party. I will also be making sushi rolls the day before, as well as a couple of pans of enchiladas (I told you his menu was all over the place)! I will wait, however, to cook the enchiladas a couple of hours before the party begins. I plan on buying disposable food warmers from Wal-mart to keep the wings and enchiladas warm.

Decorations – In my opinion, this is the most exciting part of throwing a party! My husband would like his party to have a “basement party” feel, so we’re swapping out all of our downstairs light bulbs with colored ones. We’re “lighting” up the rest of the rooms with led-based decorations. LED balloons will decorate the floor (we bought these on ebay), along with regular latex balloons.
For centerpieces, we’re using clear vases from our wedding and filling them with water, clear gel fillers and submersible LED lights (which we’ll more than likely get from ebay or the dollar store)!
And after looking at numerous sites for a reasonably priced cupcake stand, I’ve decided to make one on my own. Mind you, you can buy cardboard stands for rather cheap and decorate them to your liking, but I would like something that will allow me to incorporate our LED theme. I went to the dollar store last night, and bought a 10 inch clear plate and a clear glass goblet. I will glue the two together with some kind of strong, clear glue. The plan is to find a larger, clear glass serving dish from the thrift store that I can use as my bottom layer, but if my search is unsuccessful, I will just head back to the dollar store and make 3 tiered but separate cake stands. I’ll take pics to demonstrate what I’m talking about.
Last, in order to make this event all about my husband, I’ve decided to take down every picture in the house and replace them with pics of my hubby! We’ve already had lots of fun taking goofy pictures of him. And with the numerous free print offers that photo companies give out these days, there’s no need for us to pay anything out of pocket other than shipping fees! And to jazz our photos up, we’ll look for frames at the dollar store and our local thrift store!

Did you know that you can use multiple UP+ rewards in one transaction?? I wasn't completely sure myself - until now! Here's Rite Aid's updated coupon policy. Print it and carry it with you in your coupon wallet. I promise, it will come in handy. In fact, I was told a few weeks ago by a cashier that I could only use one UP+ reward per transaction. It didn't seem like a great incentive for me to incorporate more UP+ related deals in my transactions, but I didn't have any evidence to prove her wrong:

Manufacturer Coupons

Oh, The Disgust!!

It was bound to happen...I've been on a coupon high for way too long! And of all places, Kroger was the one to bring me back to earth!

I was quite excited about shopping their Mega Event today. My costly mistake, however, was going to a Kroger that was conveniently located along the route to my house rather than going to my usual store. After spending an hour looking for my items, I attempted to check out.

First, the cashier would not let me use both of my almond milk coupons - B1G1 and $1.25/1. I explained to her that the B1G1 coupon is treated as a dollar amount off coupon - it only takes off the value of the item that I'm getting for free. Yes, I had to buy 2 items in order for this dollar amount to be taken off my total, but that does not exclude me from getting a dollar amount off of the 2nd item. She didn't agree, so I asked her to get her manager. Now, normally, I will just let the cashier ring up everything else and go to customer service to get everything straightened out. I didn't feel like standing in another line tonight - especially since I knew I was right!

So...the manager comes over and repeats the same nonsense that his cashier told me. They tried to "bargain" with me by offering to only take one coupon! The manager also said that I was not allowed to use internet coupons; "it's against Kroger's policy". I just told him to cancel the entire transaction. It's against the entire corporation's policy??? At least have the decency to tell me it's just against your location's policy! I used internet coupons just last week at my Kroger with no problem! I kindly drove to Publix where I wasn't even questioned for the coupons I used.

That experience really put a sour taste in my mouth - mainly b/c I spent so much time searching for everything I needed. I could have been at home cooking - instead I had enough time to whip up a quick meal (I think that's what really irritated me) without my husband and I starving!

I know not every couponing trip will go as planned, but it is extremely frustrating when a cashier (manager, especially) does not know the policies of his/her store!!!

1 Debt Down, 1 More To Go!!!

My husband and I are happy to announce that we have scheduled the last payment for his student loan! It should be paid off end of next week!! This has put us over the hump; we are now more than 1/2 way through paying off all of our debt.

Since starting this journey, we've become dreamers - but I have to tell you, knowing that we only have one more debt to tackle has seriously opened up our imaginations. We've started talking about our dream home - where we want to live and what we want it to look like. Our last loan will by no means be an easy feat to conquer. We're looking at a $36K student loan (thanks to my stupidity in college)!!! For some reason, this large amount still doesn't break my smile!

When I went to locate my coupons, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I had (3) $3 Motrin coupons!! I was just casually searching through this week's coupon inserts when I stumbled upon a $2 coupon for any Surf detergent AND a $2 coupon for All Oxi-Active detergent (both can be found in the 5/16 Red Plum insert).

These items are both on sale this week at Kroger for $2.99 each, making them $0.99 when you use a coupon!!! I was able to grab 5 total, which means I won't have to work laundry detergent into my drug store deals for a LONG time - which makes it easier to focus on diaper sales.

This will be the 2nd week in a row that I will skip shopping at my favorite store. I was excited to see that Huggies will be on sale next week, but there's nothing to pair it with to get them for free. Here's the closest scenario I could come up with:

It's incorrect to say that you got everything for $0.50 ($18.49-$17.99 ECB) b/c you actually paid $18.49 and once this money comes out of your pocket, you aren't getting it back, not even when you spend the $17.99 ECB (you still literally spent $18.49 to get those ECB's).

I just received my cards in the mail for this program. I was automatically signed up b/c I'm a single check rebate member. It seems like there are several perks (of course, I won't be able to vouch for how good these perks are until I actually receive them!) Here's what's promised for using this program:
-24/7 pharmacist access by calling 1-800-Rite Aid
-exclusive members-only sales pricing (this is what excites me the most!)
-point system: earn 500 points to receive a free health screening, earn 1000 points to receive 20% off non-prescription purchases (you receive 1 point for every dollar spent and 25 points for every prescription filled).

This program starts tomorrow, April 18th. I'll be sure to keep you updated on my progress!

My husband and I are treating ourselves to a massage for our 1st Anniversary! Of course, I carefully weighed our options before commiting to an appointment. We finally decided to go with Massage Envy. They have numerous locations throughout the US and only charge $39 for a one hour massage for 1st time visitors! We also considered getting a massage at a school of massage - one hour massages are also only $40, so we may consider this option in the future. Now through the 14th, you can buy a $50 BP gas card for $40 when you buy $25 worth of groceries! That is, $25 before coupons. I was able to get away with only spending $10 for my groceries. One of my favorite items was a Quantumatic dishwasher detergent dispenser. It was on sale for $6.99 and I used $6 in coupons ($3 store coupon from "One Store. One Stop" booklet & $3 printable from here) to get this item for $0.99!!

You should always jump on any opportunity to get discounted gas!

Couponing at Rite Aid

I went to Rite Aid during lunch today to work the diaper deal that I blogged about yesterday. I started talking to the cashier about couponing websites and completely overlooked the fact that she did not scan one of my coupons (the pampers coupon - worth $2). While in the car, I contemplated whether I should turn around (I was only 1 minute away) and try to explain to the cashier what happened. I kept asking myself, "how cheap am I??" Do I really want to make a big deal out of $2?? Is it so bad to buy 2 toothbrushes, 1 pack of diapers, and a fusion razor for $2??

Needless to say, I turned around...lol. I've messed up numerous deals in the past (both from making mathematical errors and from not making sure the cashier scanned everything). Those dollars lost add up! Plus, I was OWED the $2 - it wasn't like I was trying to cheat Rite Aid. My cashier was super nice. She pulled out all of the coupons that I handed her and we circled what was actually taken off my tab. Sure enough, the pampers coupon was left off and she used what she called a "post-purchase coupon" button to give me my $2 back. I'm not sure if every drug store uses this policy, but I love it! Now, I know that if I forget to use a coupon (and believe me, that happens quite a bit) I can march back into the store to get my money back. :)

Don't forget, we're approaching the end of the month. That means it's time to search coupons.com, smartsource.com and redplum.com for any coupons that you think you may need. These coupons will reset April 1st, allowing you to stock up on some of the more valuable ones.

Also, don't forget to watch whatever Rite Aid video values you think (or even have an inkling) that you will need a coupon for - I always go for the diaper ones. These videos will be replaced with newbies the 1st of the month!!

And last, check out Restaurant.com for dining deals. Use code "COOK" (expires March 31st) to get an additional 80% off purchase price. These coupons require you to make a minimum purchase. Best bet would be to buy a $25 gift certificate with a $35 minimum. You'll end up paying $12 ($2 for the certificate + $10 to get you to the $35 min.) for a $35 meal - that's a savings of ~66%!

I was recently given the opportunity to sample this yogurt. It's fat free and has two times more protein than its competitors. I have to admit, it tastes "healthy" - it was a bit gritty and definitely not sweetened up like some of the other brands I've tasted. But that's what I prefer - the real, raw deal. I used my yogurt (I tried Strawberry but it also comes in Honey Vanilla, Blueberry, and Plain) as a dip for my apple. It was a very filling treat!

Our Progress (with Debt)!

My husband and I are down to our 2 biggest debts (student loans)! It seems like it's taking forever to put a dent in them. We decided to tackle my husband's loan 1st b/c it was the smallest ($18k - yikes!). So, after we paid off the car last November, we've been dedicating all of our excess $$ to this debt. By the end of this month, we will be down to $7k!!! I wasn't excited about this progress until this week. It just dawned on me that if we keep this up, the rate we're going, we'll be out of debt by next June!! Believe me, I cannot wait for that day! Our other loan (actually, it's mine) is a monster - $36K!!! It's going to take a year to plow through. Surprisingly, couponing has really helped us dig bigger holes into these debts. Our grocery/toiletry budget is $40/week...so far, this year, we're averaging $30/week (I'll have to give you our total savings at a later time; I don't have the spreadsheet in my face - yes, I keep a spreadsheet of my savings!). And what's even more amazing is we're still able to treat ourselves. Granted, we can't go on a vacation this year but we're looking to do a few local activities (for at least 1/2 the price, of course)!

I will let you all know when we completely eliminate my hubby's student loan. Baby Steps... :)

So, I've been on this health kick lately. I'm still learning but decided to make a trip to Whole Foods in the mean time. I was able to pick up Almond milk for free. Here's how:

I found that the prices weren't too much expensive than what you find in "regular" grocery stores (don't get me wrong, some items were outrageously priced). I'm still not certain what items I should be on the look out for, but when I get a better idea I'll be sure to let you know. I was surprised, however, that not everything in Whole Foods was natural or organic (which is why I need to do more studying on what to eat/what not to eat). In the mean time, if you have any healthy eating tips (or recipes), please send them my way.

I went to this really cool place yesterday called the library (lol)! Seriously...I haven't been in years, and it's changed (for the better)! For starters, I was able to check myself out. I normally just buy books for little to nothing on Half.com, but I'm running out of room to house them. Not to mention, you just can't beat FREE!

Also, reading books make you sharp, more alert, (hopefully) smarter! They also enhance your imagination (and your kids' as well), so get ready to dream BIG!!
